One of this year’s most anticipated phone series is set to debut next month. Yes — it’s time for the iPhone 17, which is expected to arrive alongside the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. It’s also widely rumored that Apple will introduce a super-thin iPhone 17 Air, similar in concept to the Galaxy S25 Edge, which is expected to feature a smaller battery but a sleeker finish.
You can read more about iPhone 17 rumors in our dedicated piece. Everything below is based on Apple’s past patterns for phone launches and could change before the official announcement — we’ll update this with confirmed information as soon as we have it, which will likely be at the very end of August.
When is the next iPhone coming out?
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro were introduced on 9 September 2024. Pre-orders opened on Friday 13 September, and the phones became widely available on Friday 20 September. Although the 2024 reveal took place on a Monday instead of Apple’s usual Tuesday, the company kept its familiar pattern of pre-orders starting the following Friday and general availability the Friday after that.
We wondered whether the Monday date was chosen to dominate the week’s tech news cycle, though there may have been practical reasons as well.
Looking at the calendar, we can therefore expect the iPhone 17 to be revealed on Monday 8 or Tuesday 9 September, with pre-orders beginning on Friday 12 and general availability on Friday 19 September.
While the Monday reveal in 2024 was unusual, it wasn’t the first time Apple broke with tradition. The iPhone 14 launch in 2022 happened on a Wednesday and was earlier than usual. In 2020, global circumstances delayed availability for some models, and in 2017 the iPhone X wasn’t released until November.
How much will the iPhone 17 cost?
Apple generally avoids raising prices every year, instead increasing them only every few generations. UK customers experienced significant price hikes with the iPhone 14 generation, while US prices have largely remained stable in recent years. The iPhone 15 Pro Max was an exception, carrying an extra $100/£100 while other models retained their previous pricing.
In the US, iPhone 16 prices started at $799, with the iPhone 16 Plus at $899. The iPhone 16 Pro began at $999, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max started at $1,199. In the UK, the iPhone 16 began at £799, the 16 Plus at £899, the 16 Pro at £999, and the 16 Pro Max at £1,199.
Until Apple makes the iPhone 17 generation official, it’s hard to say whether these prices will remain the same for another year.
When has the iPhone launch taken place in the past?
The original iPhone launched in January 2007 (the UK launch occurred later that year), and subsequent launches sometimes took place in June or October. Since the iPhone 5, however, launches have mostly settled into the September slot.
The notable exception was 2020, when the iPhone 12 lineup was delayed because of pandemic-related production slowdowns. The iPhone 13 series returned to a more normal schedule, and the iPhone 14 launch in 2022 was earlier than the previous year.
